Humboldt Peak, located in the Sierra Nevada National Park, is the second highest peak in Venezuela, with 4.940 meters high. This peak is one of the few in the country that has permanent snow on its top.
The ascent to this peak initiates in the Mucuy Park at Merida, from where the ascent is first through a cloud forest, . While ascending, you will pass through various rivers and beautiful lagoons. The vegetation changes gradually with altitude opening place to the typical Sierra Nevada mountain views with its black rocks, flailejones and astonishing views of the of the Sierra Nevada Peaks.
This is an excursion for people trained in hiking, since it requires a considerable training, and offers some technical difficulties as walking through the Morrenas or huge glacier rocks, and climbing with crampons and piolet.
LENGTH: 6 days - 5 nights
HIGHLIGHTS: Conquer the summit of the second highest Venezuelan peak and the only with a permanent glacier.
Practice the use of crampons and piolet in a technical but low difficulty climb.
Enjoy spectacular lagoons during your ascent, and amazing views of the Sierra Nevada Peaks.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS: Training level: advanced, average daily hikes of 6 hours.
Technical Level: intermediate: use of crampons, piolet as well as ropes and harness in some sections.

Day 2: COROMOTO LAGOON ground transfer to Sierra Nevada national park where you will meet your guides. After a brief equipment check and meet each other, we will begin our moderate ascent through the cloud forest crossing small creeks until reaching Coromoto Lake where we will set our tents.
Altitude: 2160 meters.
Hiking time: 5 hours
Day 3: VERDE LAGOON After an abundant and delicious breakfast we will walk around the lagoon and begin a steep hike over loose rocks until reaching Laguna Verde where we will set up the tents.

Our trip to Bolivar and Humboldt peaks was great, but was customize. We asked Akanan to take us for a non-traditional route, departing from Gavidea instead from La Mucuy, which is the traditional departing point. This was a challenge for Akanan, because the logistics, the path and the distances were more difficult and longer. Even though these challenges and some small problems during the trip, everything was good and the travel was incredible. The guides were very professional and the porters good and interesting guys. It was a great personal experience, but definitely not for inexperience hikers. The trip is long, physical and psychological demanding but it worth it.
